1st SIF Spelling bee a success!

1ST ANNUAL SAM IGBE FOUNDATION SPELLING

The Sam Igbe Foundation hosted its first Annual Spelling Bee competition on the 22nd and 24th of June 2016 at the Bishop Kelly Pastoral Center, Benin City, Edo state. The spelling bee was targeted at junior secondary school students in public schools.

The foundation sent invitation letters to the various public schools and principals of these schools were given the opportunity to select 3 or 4 students to represent their school. 10 schools participated; Imueguero College Junior Secondary, Oredo Junior Sec, Emotan College, Itohan Junior School, Idia Junior College, Edo College, Anglican Girls Grammar School, western Boys high school, Eweka Grammar School and Asoro GrammarSchool. The competition saw a total of 32 students from the above schools.

The semi-final of the event was conducted on the 22nd of June, 2016. The selected students represented their schools tremendously well. It was a reverting competition that showed dedication not just on the part of the students but their schools as well. There was no doubt that these students had worked hard. The guests were impressed and greatly pleased by their performances. At the end of the semi-finale the participants had been narrowed down to 8 finalists for the finale.

The finale was on the 24th of June and it was even more impressive than the semi-finale. At the finale, we had a representative from Her Excellency, Iara Oshimole and also representatives from the Speaker of House of Representation of Edo State.

The 8 finalists came to win! They spelt their words with speed and precision. The children spelt all the available words for the competition, the organizers had to ask the guests for new words and when those finished they resorted to the dictionary. At the end of the competition the winners emerged. The first place winner was JSS 2 female student from Asoro Grammar School, Chelsea Abulu and the second place winner was Eloghosa Ebowe from Edo College, and the third place was Destiny Enokeran from Edo College.

At the end of the competition, the first place winner received N75,000, second place winner received N50,000 , and the third place received N30,000. All the students received gifts from the foundation and also were awarded gifts from her Excellency, Iara Oshoimole.

We would like to thank all our supporters, guests, students and schools for their support. It was a very educative and fun event and we can’t wait to have it again next year.
